The Naarm Architectural Papers is a new biannual publication to encourage, promote and document a public discourse on architecture in the city – within the specific vision and remit of the Naarm Architecture Foundation. It will include both commissioned essays and the publication of selected material from our Grant program. It aims to speak to ideas about architecture and the city in a language that can engage both a public and disciplinary audience.

In the late 1960s the Royal Australian Institute of Architects published a series of long form essays called The Melbourne Architectural Papers, initiated and edited by Robin Boyd, with international writers speculating on themes including “The New Forces,” (Peter Blake) “A Critic’s View,” (J.M.Richards), and “An Architecture of Participation” (Giancarlo de Carlo). This series, urgent in tone and content, was intended to provoke a public discourse on architectural ideas within the context of pressing social changes in the late 1960s. The series lapsed with the untimely death of Boyd in 1971.

This new publication seeks to take up this mantle for times and challenges that have changed. It is driven by ideas: polemical, critical, historical, cultural, experimental, and provocative. Focused on Naarm/Melbourne within a wider world of ideas and places, the publication is both parochial and cosmopolitan.
