Naarm Architecture Foundation

About

The Naarm Architecture Foundation has been established to foster, develop and promote the past, contemporary, and speculative practice of architecture in Naarm/Melbourne, and its role in the city’s culture and society. It supports architectural and related design practices that engage in a range of discursive, cultural, social, environmental, and aesthetic issues.

This vision is realised through project-based grants to individuals and organisations, alongside supporting publications, events and exhibitions. It encourages creative investigations of architecture across a diverse group of practitioners such as architects, academics, writers, curators and educators.

Grounded in Naarm/Melbourne, our vision is committed to a place-based approach to design. Naarm is the Woi-wurrung word for Melbourne, meaning ‘place’ and we acknowledge 65,000 years of continuous place making on Wurundjeri Country. We also gratefully acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation for providing formal permission to use the name Naarm.

The Naarm Architecture Foundation and its activities are based in the former offices of prominent architectural practice Edmond and Corrigan on Level 2, 46 Little La Trobe Street in central Melbourne.

The Foundation is initiated and founded by Naarm/Melbourne based architect Carey Lyon.

× Carey Lyon [Director and Chair]

Carey is a Co-founder of Naarm/Melbourne based architecture practice Lyons and has been a Professor of Architecture, and holds a PhD, at RMIT University. He has previously served as the elected National President of the Australian Institute of Architects and as a Board member of multiple design industry organisations.

× Ian McDougall [Director and Secretary]

Ian is a Co-founder of Naarm/Melbourne based architecture practice Ashton Raggatt McDougall, an Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medallist, and Adjunct Professor of Architecture at RMIT University. He is an acknowledged leader in the architectural culture of Naarm/Melbourne and has served on multiple Boards for local arts and cultural organisations.

× Marika Neustupny [Director]

Marika is a Director and Co-founder of Naarm/Melbourne based architecture practice NMBW Architecture Studio, holding a Masters of Architecture from Tokyo Institute of Technology and a PhD from the University of Queensland. She currently teaches and researches at Monash University and has extensive experience on panels and committees.

× Anna Jankovic [Director]

Anna is a Director and Co-founder of Naarm/Melbourne based architectural practice Simulaa and Lecturer at the School of Architecture and Urban Design, RMIT University. Her work spans buildings, exhibitions, research, teaching, and writing.

The Naarm Architecture Foundation is based on the unceded lands and waterways of Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country. We acknowledge over 65,000 years of continuous place-making, cultural knowledge and custodianship by Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong peoples, and by First Nations communities across Australia.

Naarm means place in Woi-wurrung language and reflects our commitment to place-based creative practice in the city of Naarm/Melbourne. We thank the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation for their guidance in using this word to shape our identity as a Foundation.
